Coal Based Power Generation – cost effective solution to power crisis

Coal plays a vital role in electricity generation worldwide. Coal-fuelled power plants currently fuel 36% of global electricity and, in some countries, coal fuels a higher percentage of electricity (Ref: Futurecoal).

Asia Energy aims to provide the most cost effective and reliable power to the people of Bangladesh based on Phulbari Coal. At full production, coal mined at Phulbari could support a power generating capacity of up to 6, 600 MW with long term assurance of supply and quality. Moreover, power with Phulbari coal doesn’t require complex transportation and handling issues like with imported coal.

Asia Energy delivered to the Government a proposal for developing a coal fired power station with up to 1,000 MW capacity at the mine site. Moreover, there will be potential for more power plants at mine mouth and in other parts of the country by local-foreign entrepreneurs based on reliable supply of coal from Phulbari mine. Phulbari coal can reliably meet large share of coal demand (over 60%) for the newly built large coal-fired power plants (over 7,000 MW capacity), which is now fully import dependent.

Phulbari coal will help ease largely the existing power shortage of the country and provide an alternative source other than natural gas and imported liquid fuel including coal. With gas reserve rapidly running down and imported liquid fuel costly, using local coal for power generation will relieve pressure on foreign currency outflow and will be a significant step to reduce power generation cost for the people of Bangladesh.
